On the 28th of June 2009 LotsofInterviews.com conducted a interview with writer Victor Gischler and artist Bong Dazo about their new ongoing series, "Deadpool: Merch with a Mouth." We talk about writing and drawing comedy, how they came to work on the series and what we can expect from it. LotsofInterviews.com would like to thank them both for their time.
Mouth”?
My agent David Hale Smith reps some quality comic bok writers, and I expressed interest in getting into scripting. He hooked me up with Marvel Editor Axel Alonso. After scipting for Punsiher and Wolverine, Axel thought I'd be a good match for the new Deadpool title and what to hear my ideas. We tossed ideas back and forth until we landed on somethign we liked, and I got the gig.
What is the basic premise the series?
The first couple arcs are a super-cool team up with Deadpool's own Zombie Head. Yeah, baby.
How is this series going to differ from the other ongoing Deadpool series?
One thing I felt strongly about was that there was no need to reinvent the wheel. I think the Way series is genius and the Deadpool character already kicks so much ass. The Merc With the Mouth series is an opportunity to relocate Deadpool to other locations and situations in a way that showcases his relentless awesomeness. Also, readers familiar with my novels know I love the quirky combination of violent action and comedy, so this is right where I live.
Do you feel a lot of pressure to be original when writing a
second on going series?
As a writer I'll be bringing my own take to Deadpool. This will
evolve naturally. But certainly I'm aware that Deadpool is a very
popular charcter, so yes, I'm acutely aware I need to bring my A-
Game.
Is Deadpool going to be as crazy as ever in this series?
Crazy? Why whatever do you mean? Deadpool is a perfectly
rational person with sound ideas for every situation.
When writing a comedy book such as this do you think of the
story first or the jokes?
The story has to come first, and then the gags fit in more organically. Once in a while, I'll think of a gag I really really like, and I'll kind of wait around to use it. But most of the time the joes need to come naturally from the flow of the story.
What can we expect Deadpool to get up to in the first few issues?
All the crazy creamy goodness we want and need from Deadpool ... but in fancy-schmancy locations with a cool cast of supporting characters. And maybe a zombie or two.
