Interview:Josh Keaton
The Voice of Spiderman
On the 30th of July 2009 LotsofInterviews.com conducted an interview with Josh Keaton, who is currently the voice of Spiderman in "The Spectacular Spider-Man" cartoon. We talk about how he got into voice acting, how he got his part as Spiderman, if he feels pressure voicing Spiderman and his work away from Spiderman.
How is it that you got into voice acting?
When I was younger I was in several animated series
(Back to the Future, Peter Pan and the Pirates) and was
sent to audition for them by my on-camera agent at the time. It wasn’t until I did Disney’s Hercules that I got a dedicated voice over agent and pursued it a bit more seriously.
What do people say when you tell them you are a voice actor?
Well I’m not exclusively a voice actor so I mainly just tell them I’m an actor and hope they don’t ask me where I bartend.
Have you ever been recognized on the street from your work?
I’ve gotten recognized occasionally for my on camera work but I
have yet to have someone hear me and say, “Dude, you totally
sound like [insert credit here]!!”
How is it you came to be the voice of Spiderman?
They auditioned about 3000 people when casting the show
and I made it through each subsequent cut. I originally
auditioned for Spidey/Peter, Eddie Brock/Venom, and Harry
Osbourne, but was always secretly hoping that I would get cast
for Spidey, and am stoked that that’s how it turned out.
Did you feel any pressure voicing such a popular character?
Initially yes, it was a bit daunting because he’s an iconic
character with a massive following and very established canon.
I’ve been a Spidey fan/reader since I was a kid, however and I
wanted to put forth the best possible Spidey I could.
Did you watch any older Spiderman cartoons to get an idea
of the voice?
I watched some of the older shows growing up as a kid, but I
didn’t really reference any of the shows in order to get into the part. Rather than imitate an existing take on the character, I wanted to create my own. I had a lot of prior knowledge of the character from reading comics as well as my own high school experience as a geek to draw from.
Is it fun to work on the show?
It’s a blast. I’ve gotten to work with some of the best voice actors in the business as well as a ton of extremely talented actors from in front of the camera, as well as a crew that is as big a fan of Spider-Man as I am. Not only that, I get to be Spider-Man! It’s a geek dream come true.
You use to be in a Boy Band called “No Authority”, what was this like?
I loved it. I got to learn so much about music production and had the opportunity to travel the world. It was definitely a fantastic experience.
