On the 9th of March 2009 LotsofInterviews.com conducted a interview with Kari Wahlgren, as part of our 'Wolverine and the X-Men' feature, who works as voice over actress and is the voice of Emma Frost along with voicing 'Charmcaster' on Ben 10, Saturn Girl and Triplicate Girl on the Legion of Super-Heroes and also had a part in the recent film "BOLT".
I've always wanted to do voiceovers, so I started training as an actor and doing small radio spots in Kansas City before moving to Los Angeles and pursuing my career further.
What do people say when you tell them you are a voice actor?
Usually they say that it sounds like a neat job or they'll ask how to get into the business. I was at a wedding once, and when I met the priest, he said "You know, I've always wanted to get into voiceovers...." and proceeded to do voices for me!
Have you ever been recognised on the street from your work?
No, I see people wearing t-shirts with my characters on them sometimes, but I'm usually too shy to say anything!
What is your favourite character which you have voiced?
I don't have a favourite--I love a lot of the characters I've done.
Is there any show you would like to work on if you had the chance?
Most of the shows I would like to work on are shows from the past that are no longer on the air except in re-reruns...Batman: the animated series, for example. But maybe they wouldn't have impacted me as much if I had worked on them....
When you do voice work are you with the other actors in the studio?
With video games and anime, we usually work alone in the studio. With original animation (like Legion of Superheroes), we record as a group.
Were you a fan of the X-Men before you got your role on Wolverine and the X-Men? Had you read the comics, watched past TV shows/Films?
I became an X-Men fan after the first movie came out; I had a friend who collected the comics, so I would sit up reading them late into the night! I got pretty addicted! That made it extra important to me to try and do a good job on the cartoon.
You voice Emma Frost, can you relate to her at all?
Well, we're both blondes! Seriously, though, I like that she's a complex character--I think deep down, people are rarely black or white...we all have layers...
Your character on Wolverine and the X-Men has the power to read minds and turn to diamond but if you could have any power then what would it be?
There's an obscure X-Men character who had the power to speak every single language in the world...I would love that...I guess it's more of a 'practical' power, but I find myself daydreaming about how I'd use that power if I had it!
When you were developing the voice of Emma Frost did you watch how the character had been voiced before?
The nice thing is that Emma wasn't a major character in the 90's series, so there wasn't as much pressure to follow or deviate from another performance...it gave me a little more freedom.
