Interview:Mighty Avengers Issues 23 and 24
Khoi Pham and Rafa Sandoval
On the 19th of May LotsofInterviews.com interviewed Khoi Pham about his drawing of issue 23 of Mighty Avengers and Rafa Sandoval about his drawing of issue 24 as part of our "Mighty Artist" feature. (these two interviews are grouped due to Khoi being extremely busy at the moment which caused a slight delay with that interview). Hope you enjoy!
Issue 23: Khoi Pham
This cover features Stature, Vision and the Hulk, do you go about
drawing vision any differently as he is a robot?
I try and stick with Jim Cheung's design as much as I can. Meaning,
make him all shimmery.
You start this book off with Thor, how did you find it drawing him
being such an iconic character and recognisable to people who don’t even know what a comic book is?
Like Jim's Young Vision, I just try and stay faithful to Olivier Coipel's design for Thor. They make it easy.
You have also got a few new Thor-related characters to add to your Marvel character drawing competition, how is that going?
Ha. I think I might be pulling ahead of Reilly Brown, especially since his next book involves characters I've already drawn. He and I seriously have to sit down and go over our lists.
Where did the ‘Giant Tentacle Monster’s’ design come from?
That's how interpreted Dan Slott's descriptions. I think I could've gone more gooey body parts mass with it, but tentacles are just too fun.
How did you draw the Fluttering wings on ‘the Wasp’?
I drew a few lines, and Jason Keith and Matt Milla (colorists) did all the
hard work.
Were you surprised by Loki as much as everyone else?
Well, Dan's pretty collaborative in his writing process, so I know exactly
what's going on even before I get a script. So, no, I wasn't surprised. But
it didn't make it any less cool for me. For true Avengers fans, you'll
recognize that Loki was first responsible for putting the first Avengers
team together, albeit unintentionally.
What advice would you give to the artists filling in for you?
Do your own thing. Don't try and please everyone -- it'll never happen, and you'll only get worse.
Do you know when the ‘Spy Master’ story is going to be released?
I'm not sure. It's with Marvel Online, though. I do know that.
