Where was it that the concept of the Pet Avengers came from?
Well, my editor, Nate Cosby, wanted to do a book about Lockjaw and some other of the Marvel animals. He asked me to pitch him an idea. I went away, got info on all the animals, picked who I thought would work, came up with the story and he bought it.
Was it difficult researching the pets of the Marvel universe?
Thanks to the internet and interns, it wasn't too hard. Nate had an intern look up all the Marvel animals while I researched them and settled onto the ones that worked.
I was doing some research and strictly speaking, is Lockjaw not just an inhuman who has been mutated?
Technically, it's never been resolved in the books. Stan has said he's a dog and I take his word on it. I've even crafted a back story on how he was changed and have an idea for a bit that would prove once and for all that he's a dog. Problem is, I don't think my editor thinks there's a need for it. He's a dog--final answer. :)
Yeah I do think there is such a thing as knowing too much.
I think it's also fun not being sure. It's part of the fun of super hero comics--the debate.
We also have Ms. Lion, has she been in a comic before?
Ms. Lyon--I've been told I spelled it wrong. Go figure. I don't think he has ever been in a regular comic.
Did you think that gives you a bit more freedom to do what you want with the character?
I think I have a lot of freedom with all the characters. I've been pretty much given the green light to go with what I want. But, even with Ms. Lyon, I truly respect all these characters and what they mean to the fans.
Then there's Niels the Cat who is now called 'Hairball', is there a reason for this?
It's fun. Simple reason.
Are we going to see how he dealt with his owner going a bit nuts?
Not really. Niels is a typical cat--they don't really care about their owner except when they want food, affection or a face to sleep on. He's too interested in hunting mice.
Then there's Frog Thor who you created for the book, where did this idea come from?
A couple years back, I did an out-of-continuity story for Spider-Man family. A homage to Walt's Frog Thor story. I thought it was so cool and when Nate offered me the book I said that a new Frog Thor had to be in it. I was going to bring Throg back into Marvel continuity. Of course, now Nate claims credit. I am willing to share the blame with him. :)
