I can relate to feeling like the little guy, I suppose. I’m
usually one of the shortest guys in the room. I know he’s
portrayed a little more comical in the cartoon than in the
comics, but I kinda like the guy. He’s a little quirky and
eager, sometimes not thinking things through. Plus, he’s
a genius, so I can totally relate to that. I mean, after all, I
done learned me some gooder stuff than the average
peoples did back when I were in college like how to spell
and stuff and write good so I is just as smart as Forge is
and stuff and things ya know.
Your character on ‘Wolverine and the X-Men’ has the
power to build anything but if you could have any power then what would it be?
This is cheesy, but I’d want to fly. And I’d like to have the ability to conjure up a warm jacket whenever I needed it. Because, flying is cool and all, but it gets cold up there. So, you know, I’d like to fly and be prepared for it. And the ability to make goggles appear on my face would be sweet, too. No gnats getting in my eyes. I’d hate that.
When you were developing the voice of Forge did you watch how the character had been voiced before?
Not at all. In fact, I was unaware of how he should’ve sounded. Again, he’s a lot different in the comics, from what I’ve seen. I think if I had seen a picture of him in the comics first, I’d have played him way too old and incorrect for where he’s at right now.
In Resident Evil 5 you voice Chris Redfield, were you familiar with the series before you got the part?
This has been irritating a lot of fans out there, but I was not too familiar with the series. I’d played a little bit of RE4, but had no idea what the story lines were. It wasn’t until I was a couple of sessions into the recording for Chris that it started to dawn on me that I was a part of something big. Now, between RE5 and “Degeneration,” I’ve been exposed to a whole new world out there. It’s an incredible series with a great story. I can see why so many people are fans of it.
When you were developing the voice of Chris, did you spend time listening to how he was voiced in passed games?
Nope. I was never given any reference to go off of. In fact, I was still unaware of what it was that I was auditioning for when I was doing the first few auditions. It was just me delivering a voice for a character that was described to me in a certain way and we started tweaking and fine-tuning the character from there. Liam O’Brien and Stephanie Sheh were very helpful in defining Chris as a character.
Did you feel a lot of pressure living up to fans expiations of how Chris Redfield should sound?
Thankfully, I didn’t know how big of a deal Chris was to fans at the time. I might have been a little too “in my head” if that was the case and the character might have suffered. Instead, I was coming at this from a very fresh perspective and, again, the directors really helped me hone in on the character. I’m really hoping that the fans like what we’ve put together as voice actors. I’m immensely proud to be the voice of Chris and I’m hoping that the fans enjoy the performance. I know there will always be those that you just can’t satisfy, but I’m hoping people can see that we really did put a ton of effort into creating strong performances in the game. Everyone did an amazing job on this game from the ground up. I can’t believe just how many people it takes to create this series. It’s huge.
Have you had a chance to play the game yet? Did you enjoy it?
Played the Xbox demo. Here’s my favorite thing: Pushing the “B” button and hearing me say “C’mon” and Sheva say, “Roger.” I’m like, “Dude, Sheva knows my name!” That never gets old. I’m a dork.
