you find it effective when the art can tell the story
by it’s self?
One of the big influences on UNTHINKABLE that very
few people have picked up on was the first ever
comic book series that I read regularly - Larry
Hama's amazing run on G.I.Joe. The Snake Eyes
"silent issue" left a lasting impression on me, and
was the first glimpse I got into this medium's
possibility.
So silent sequences can be very effective,
especially when you are as wordy as I am:).
Seriously, they are actually quite hard to pull off, because I have to trust that the artist will be able to tell the story on his own. Otherwise, I have to add captions, dialogue or sound effects to make things clear and the result is awkward.
Luckily, that was never a worry with artist Julian Totino Tedesco. Julian did an amazing job with the mostly silent opening to Issue 1, so I knew he could pull off the silent oil rig fight sequence in this issue. He's got another great action silent sequence in issue 3.
Any hints to what the next issue might hold?
We start to see the world change, both for better and for worse, because the effects of the attacks Ripley failed to stop have huge consequences. It may be the most controversial issue because it deals with extremists from the three major Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Islam and Christianity) and takes place in a spot that's holy to them all.
But it's not all politics. There's an incredibly intense opening in terms of both action and character. Oh, and a Think Tank member dies.
Yes. I try to use references as much as I can, but it is a lot harder when you deal with places that you haven’t ever seen before. You have to pay extra attention, and it tends to tire you out after a certain amount of pages.
The “Don’t worry, Vaccinate” sign has a very 50’s feel to it, did you do this on purpose?
Actually that´s a real sign. Mark gave me a photo reference for it. I just retouched the image a little.
Where did you get the design of the night vision goggles from?
They are pretty strange, right? I searched on the internet for some samples , but for some reason at the moment of drawing them I didn’t pay much attention to the references (shame on me!). So it’s a bizarre design which from out of my mind.
Did you have to do a lot of research into oil drills for this issue?
I searched all I could from google. I have never saw the interior of an oil rig in my life and there aren’t many pictures of it on the net, but most people are unaware of how does it looks like on the inside, so that helps.
